ORiginal Grand Tour Egyptian Revival sterling winged scarab brooch
Scarabs are associated with the Egyptian god, Khepri. It was Khepri that pushed the sun across the sky. The scarab beetle became an ancient Egyptian symbol for rebirth, the ability to be reborn. Each day the sun disappeared, always to rise again and be reborn the following day.
This brooch was not mass produced and was specially made for a gentleman who traveled the world thru the Grand tour period as a gift to his daughter . IT was said that he felt mother of pearl protected children and it would keep her safe while he was away. He gave this to her to help her remember how much he loved her on her 5th birthday. This was passed on from owner to owner of this brooch until it arrived in my possession about 20 years ago. THis has never been offered for public sale and has been in private collections. SOlid sterling ( marked sterling on the back) this 3" long piece of history is in very good condition and it weighs 5.8 grams. THe mother of pearl inlay was hand set into the sterling wings too. THis has a C clasp and is in great condition.
