Traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66 you mostly follow the Santa Fe Railroad corridor. You'll pass hundreds if not thousands of similar railroad gates along the way. I believe this one was just off the old road west of Amarillo where I stopped under the only tree near the road that could provide enough shade to enjoy a picnic lunch. I always travel with a packed cooler just so I can stop and enjoy places just like this. I even remember the train as it rumbled past, rattling the ground and breaking the silence.
