Girl with a Pearl Earring, VG
Details
This is my version of Vermeer's painting, quite respectfully. We have no indication of what made him create his painting, although Peter Webber's film does a great job at creating a story. My version (VG for "Version Gargost") has a story that can live a while, I hope. I've always been fascinated by other painters, and Vermeer is no exception. The lost painting, "The Concert," is a wonderful painting that creates anticipation while allowing you to "listen" to the music.
"A Girl Reading a Letter by a Window" makes you wonder whether the letter brings good tidings. Like most of Vermeer's paintings, these paintings have a story painted around the subjects. Such is not the case with "The Girl with a Pearl Earring." She is painted against a dark background. We have no idea of what the room looks like. There are no tapestries on the walls. If she is sitting down, we do not know. She is simply dressed, but she is wearing a pearl. Was that contrived? Did she really own pearl earrings? What she of good birth or was she poor?
Not wanting to recreate Vermeer's work, I decided to create my own version, inspired by his work and my fascination by it. I hope you enjoy it.
