A delicate butterfly pendant and rich colors grace this lovely handmade necklace, named, AWAKENING. For some reason, I feel the butterfly depicted is taking a first flight after its amazing metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a winged creature, an "awakening", so to speak. The beautifully unique necklace was carefully created with an individually handmade Thai Hill Tribes fine silver butterfly pendant, faceted aqua quartz rondelles, Peruvian blue opal tubes, oxidized sterling silver and a textured pewter toggle clasp. The necklace is enchanting in its simplicity and is perfect for year round wear. Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs carefully designed and handcrafted the AWAKENING necklace. Since it is a one of a kind (OOAK) design, another one like this will never be made again. Purchase it now and you will be the only one in the universe with a lovely necklace like this!

I fell in love with the fine silver pendant when I first saw it. Haven't we all been transfixed at one time or another watching a butterfly? Butterflies have been revered by many cultures all through the history of mankind, being seen as almost a shamanic creature, especially by many Native Americans. Because of its life cycle change from an egg to a caterpillar to a chrysalis and finally to its winged beauty, a butterfly is often seen as a metaphor for the souls' spiritual journey and transformation. They also represent freedom, joy, creativity and change.
The pendant was carefully handmade high in the hills of Thailand by a group of people called the Karen Hill Tribe. Using traditional techniques and tools that have been passed down through generations, each Thai silver piece is individually handmade. As you can see in the photos, the main focus of the pendant is the butterfly stamped just a bit off center of the rectangle. Just above the butterfly is a flower. Then a design of crescents and dots decorate along the textured edge of the pendant. A tube bail was soldered onto the top of the pendant. The silver used to create the pendant is called "fine silver" because pieces can be 99% pure silver, as opposed to sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver. For more information about Thai fine silver, please see more information below.
To continue with the magical look of a butterfly, I decided to use two gemstones that complement each other in color: aqua quartz and Peruvian blue opal. The aqua quartz is actually a dyed gemstone, quartz that was heat treated with a permanent dye. Since quartz is normally a clear to translucent stone, it has a tendency to glow when dyed. That is the case with the aqua quartz used in the AWAKENING necklace, which, unfortunately, the photos don't convey very well. The aqua quartz is a rondelle shape and is faceted for maximum sparkle.
The second gemstone used is Peruvian blue opal tubes. The national stone of Peru, Peruvian blue opal is a relatively rare stone found only in the Andes mountains near San Patricio. The color ranges from a dark to light blue but always with a resemblance of the colors of the waters of the Caribbean. The Peruvian blue opals used in the AWAKENING necklace are a lighter blue, a perfect counterpoint to the aqua quartz, and were hand cut and formed to they are not exactly the same in size and length. Three tubes were used on each side of the necklace, the longest nearest the pendant. Two oxidized sterling silver daisy spacers frame each opal.
Because of the old silver look of the butterfly pendant, I decided to oxidize the sterling silver instead of leaving the silver shiny. The silver was oxidized with a boiled egg, a non-toxic way to darken metal. An oxidized 2 mm sterling silver bead was used to separate each gemstone, bringing out the beauty of each. I especially love the darkened silver against the Peruvian blue opal tubes.
To finish the AWAKENING necklace, I looked through my clasps and decided to use a high quality, lead free toggle clasp instead of a sterling one. I chose this particular clasp because it, too, is oxidized, highlighting the raised dotted design that mimic the 2 mm sterling beads. The clasp was connected to the main body of the necklace with sterling wire protectors and crimped with sterling crimp tubes. The tubes were covered with sterling crimp covers to mimic 3 mm silver beads.
For a better understanding of the relative size of the pendant and gemstones used in the AWAKENING necklace, please be sure to check out photo #8 for a size comparison with a quarter.
***The Karen Hill Tribe, living high in the mountains of Thailand (in the Golden Triangle area), use traditional techniques to make their fine silver pieces. Because they live so close to nature, a majority of Hill Tribe designs have nature-inspired or symbolic designs. Fine silver has a higher silver content than sterling silver - it can be up to 99% pure as opposed to sterling silver which is 92.5% pure silver. Because of the higher silver content, fine silver has a beautiful "old" glow to it and does not tarnish as quickly as sterling silver does.
A butterfly is often seen as a metaphor for the souls' spiritual journey and transformation. Aqua Quartz is often linked to creativity, intuition and sensitivity. Peruvian Blue Opals are believed to be a stone of love and gentleness; they also help the wearer find the "right action" throughout life. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us. Pewter is believed to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality.
The AWAKENING butterfly necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
***Please be aware that not all computer monitors show colors exactly the same. The colors of the stones are extremely close to the actual color on my monitor. They may appear lighter or darker on yours.
