TOURMALINE Green Faceted Loose GEMSTONE Pearshape 3.18 cts fgs110
Vintage green tourmaline, a faceted pearshape gemstone, custom-cut in Bangkok in 1979 from Brazilian rough that Joel acquired in Teofilo Otoni, Brazil on a buying trip. It measures 25 x 5 mm and weighs 3.18 carats. Its unusual and distinctive shape would make this stone ideal for the focal element in a unique piece of jewelry.
Tourmaline is a family name, consisting of more than a dozen minerals of widely varying composition. Several of these occur in gem quality, and the complex chemistry of the material results in an enormous range of colors with perhaps more than 100 distinct hues on record. Of these, green is the best known and most popular. Blue tourmaline is called indicolite, and the red variety is called rubellite. Chromium in a tourmaline creates a hue that is remarkably like that of the very finest emerald. Chrome tourmaline is quite rare, and commercially produced only in a few small African localities in Kenya and Tanzania.
This lovely stone is eye-clean and has an intense dark green color. In many gems, a flat surface on the back causes a loss in brilliancy (this is called a "window"). "Closing" the back of the stone (the pavilion) also intensifies the color. Custom cutting allows the material to be fashioned in a way that the optimum amount of light is reflected while still allowing the gem's color to emerge. This stone displays optimum color and brilliancy simultaneously. This would make a spectacular focal stone in a jewelry piece. It's unusual extra-long pear shape would allow it to be made into a spectacular and unusual focal piece of jewelry.
?One of the photographs shows several of the books Joel has written. The Color Encyclopedia of Gemstones has for more than 30 years been the world's most authoritative source of information on (and pictures of) gemstones, including many of the rare gems. (books not included in purchase!)?
The price is for this one vintage tourmaline that Joel had custom-cut in Bangkok from rough produced in Brazil in the mid 1970s.

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
Nice beads!! Super fast thanks a lot!!!
I have dreamed of having a necklace such as the jade one. But the red one. That was a surprise. Both are beautiful. Thank you! Best, Jane
Lovely color;!interesting stones.
When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
