RHODOLITE GARNET matched pair oval vintage gems TW 2.16 cts fgs141
This is a perfectly matched pair of calibrated dark purple oval cut vintage rhodolite garnets weighing a total of 2.16 carats and each with dimensions 7 x 5 mm.
Garnet is a family name. The family consists of more than half a dozen species and boasts gemstones in every color except blue. Most commercially available gem garnets are some shade of red, but dark emerald green garnets have become popular as well. Lesser known colors include shades of pink (malaya), orange (spessartine, grossular) and mint green (grossular, andradite).
Garnet is the birthstone for January. Pure red garnets (the species called pyrope) were the rage in Victorian times, and are usually very small. Brownish-red garnets (almandine) are the ones most commonly seen in modern jewelry. There is a unique garnet color variety with a chemical composition between pyrope and almandine. This variety, called rhodolite (in allusion to the rose-red color), can be purplish-red or dark red at one extreme, and pure violet (like amethyst) at the other. Purplish-red garnets almost always turn out to be rhodolites.
Small rhodolites with an amethystine color are found in North Carolina, but most gem rhodolites come from Tanzania and are red or purplish-red. The ones pictured are a lovely purple color, eye-clean, and quite brilliant because they were custom-cut from rough acquired by Joel in Africa in the late 1970s.
We guarantee that these stones are untreated natural rhodolite garnets and date from the 1970s. The price is for the one matched pair of faceted gemstones.
Please note: One of the photos shows a few of the 7 books that Joel has written on the subject of gems and minerals. We want you to be assured that you are buying from one of the world's leading experts in the field. Books not included in purchase.

We will continue to refund to customers any amount that greatly exceeds our actual cost of shipping and handling.
ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $16.50 for any package weighing from 1-5 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $16.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.
All international orders have contents described as "loose beads" and are flagged as "commercial samples" or " gift" if you prefer to make your life easier when receiving your beads. If you'd like us to mark your order as " gift" instead please let us know!
All our beads are inspected one by one before being shipped. They are individually wrapped to protect them and then put in little plastic ziploc bags.

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
Nice beads!! Super fast thanks a lot!!!
I have dreamed of having a necklace such as the jade one. But the red one. That was a surprise. Both are beautiful. Thank you! Best, Jane
Lovely color;!interesting stones.
When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
