Vintage Chinese Amber Shou Bead Earrings, 24K Bali Gold Vermeil Bead
Vintage Chinese Rare Amber Bead Carved Shou Longevity Symbol, Bali 24L gold vermeil beads, Bali 24K gold vermeil ear wires, Gold Chain
Vintage ornately carved beads that we purchased in China in the late 1970s are the focal point of these exotic looking earrings.
The total weight of these 2 beads is 7.2 grams ( amber is considered a gem and sold by weight ) and they are somewhat translucent - I have tried to show this in the photograph where the beads are back lit.
◉ Each bead is of course slightly different in terms of the opaque dark colored material and each pair is made to order. The pair of earrings you receive may look slightly different than these photos do to the nature of amber.
◉ After a great deal of research, I am fairly certain this is not Baltic, Mexican or Romanian amber but rather either from Southeast Asia or Borneo. This type of amber is actually quite rare and combines light-colored material with opaque dark-colored material that is mottled together.
The Chinese refer to this material as “root amber ” and has long been assumed to have come from China or somewhere in mainland Asia. However, over the past number of years, many feel its actual source is most likely the island of Borneo.
◉ As a point of interest, amber was one of the first stones used in amulets throughout Asia. Amber is said to carry a 'sunny' energy, probably due to its natural golden color, and is thought to eliminate negative energy and enhance a positive outlook by anyone wearing amber beads .
Amber is not a stone but fossilized resin and archaeologists have found many beautifully carved amber pieces in graves dating back around 2000 b.c. or before.
These beads show cased in these earrings measure approximately 20mm or a bit over 3/4" ( there are 25mm to the inch ! ) and have ornate high relief carving on them featuring the Chinese longevity or Shou symbol.
I have never seen beads such as these since our first encounter with them in Hong Kong in the late 1970s when I was lucky enough to purchase a few .
I have combined these large vintage amber beads with very ornate Bali gold vermeil beads in a 10mm size.
There are also vintage gold bead caps and these long dangle earrings hang from 3/4" of gold chain.
They have been finished on handmade Bali gold vermeil ear wires.
Vermeil is the name for sterling silver beads which have 24K gold plating that is at least 2.5 microns thick. Granulation is an ancient jewelry technique where tiny granules of precious metal are individually affixed to a surface of the same metal.
Total length of these fabulous earrings is approximately 2" and they will arrive in a little box all ready for gift giving.

We will continue to refund to customers any amount that greatly exceeds our actual cost of shipping and handling.
ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $16.50 for any package weighing from 1-5 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $16.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.
All international orders have contents described as "loose beads" and are flagged as "commercial samples" or " gift" if you prefer to make your life easier when receiving your beads. If you'd like us to mark your order as " gift" instead please let us know!
All our beads are inspected one by one before being shipped. They are individually wrapped to protect them and then put in little plastic ziploc bags.

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
Nice beads!! Super fast thanks a lot!!!
I have dreamed of having a necklace such as the jade one. But the red one. That was a surprise. Both are beautiful. Thank you! Best, Jane
Lovely color;!interesting stones.
When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
