Golden YELLOW ZIRCON Gemstone Vintage Oval 2.81 cts fg49
This is a vintage faceted yellow zircon, an oval cut gemstone weighing 2.81 carats and with dimensions 9.2 x 7.0 x 5.0 mm.
The color of this stone is subtle and hard to reproduce in photos, a soft beige with strong highlights of golden yellow. The cutting is superb, and the stone is extremely brilliant with no window that would allow light to leak out the back. It also displays fire, a strong color play caused by dispersion of light.
There is much confusion in the marketplace about zircon, which is a mineral that has been known and used as a gem for centuries (the old name was "hyacinth"), and is also the birthstone for December. Zirconia, by contrast, is a synthetic material manufactured in prodigious quantities and used worldwide as a diamond simulant. Naturally occurring gem zircon is quite rare, whereas manufactured zirconia is abundant and very inexpensive.
Zircon occurs in a huge range of colors. It occurs in rocks that often contain uranium minerals, and can trap microscopic amounts of uranium and other radioactive elements in its crystal structure. Exposure to this internal radiation over millennia may eventually destroy the crystallinity of the structure, a process called "metamictization". "High zircon" is crystalline, and "low zircon" is metamict. High zircon displays "fire", which is a play of color created when white light passing through the material is spread out into its component rainbow hues. Diamond is the best known example of a highly dispersive gem, but other stones, such as sphene, demantoid garnet and zircon, also display this property.
It was discovered centuries ago that gentle heating (even over a candle flame) can irreversibly and permanently change the color of some zircons. All blue zircons owe their color to this process, since naturally occurring blue zircon does not exist. A large percentage of zircon is brownish or yellowish, and in the last few years the jewelry trade has started to appreciate this range of colors for its own merits.
This lovely oval cut zircon is a perfect example of the hue that is quickly rising in popularity. We guarantee the material to be vintage zircon that was produced in the 1970s or earlier, and that Joel had recut for brilliancy in Bangkok in the late 1970s.

We will continue to refund to customers any amount that greatly exceeds our actual cost of shipping and handling.
ORDERS OUTSIDE USA: International First Class rates are now crazy: $16.50 for any package weighing from 1-5 ounces. Even an order for 2-3 small bead items may cost $16.50 or more, depending on the type of material (stone versus resin, for example). We apologize in advance if we have to adjust the postage cost of an order that has been placed. We will understand if an order is rescinded when the postage cost is too high relative to the product value.
All international orders have contents described as "loose beads" and are flagged as "commercial samples" or " gift" if you prefer to make your life easier when receiving your beads. If you'd like us to mark your order as " gift" instead please let us know!

Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.
Nice beads!! Super fast thanks a lot!!!
I have dreamed of having a necklace such as the jade one. But the red one. That was a surprise. Both are beautiful. Thank you! Best, Jane
Lovely color;!interesting stones.
When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
