Description: Planted, deciduous tree with straight trunk and open, pyramid-shaped crown, becoming wide-spreading and irregular with age; without flowers or fruit. Grown organically, in virgin soil.
USDA Zone: 2b to 9b
Height: 50 to 70 foot (15 to 21 m).
Diameter: 2 foot (0.6 m).
Leaves: 3 to 5 in cluster on spurs, or alternate; 1 to 2 inch (2.5 to 5 cm) long, 1.5 to 3 inch (4 to 7.5 cm) wide. Oddly fan-shaped, slightly thickened, slightly wavy on broad edge, often 2-lobed, with fine forking parallel veins but no midvein. Dull light green, turning yellow and shedding in autumn. Long leafstalk.
Bark: Gray; becoming rough and deeply furrowed. Twigs: light green to light brown; hairless, long and stout, with many spurs or short side twigs bearing crowded leaf scars.
Seeds and Male Cones: On separate trees in early spring. Seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) long; elliptical, naked, yellowish, with thin juicy pulp of bad odor and large thick-walled edible kernel; 1-2 at end of long stalk; maturing and shedding in autumn. Male or pollen cones .75 inch (19 cm) long.
Flower/Fruit: Small flower; female has plum shaped fruit
Site Requirements: Sun; range of soil types except very wet soil
Texture: Medium
Form: Pyramidal; irregular horizontal branches; picturesque
Habitat: Lawns and along streets in moist soil, in humid temperate regions.
Range: Apparently native in SE. China. Planted in E. United States and on Pacific Coast. Grows well in most climates, altitude limit not known, grown to 8500 feet ASL in Nevada.
Pests and Diseases: This tree is pest-free and considered resistant to gypsy moth.
Maintenance: Low
Light: Likes bright sunny conditions.
Moisture: Provide sufficient water after transplanting. Once established ginkgo is drought tolerant.
Propagation: Almost exclusively by seed. Starting in a grow station before last frost, or direct sow in soil, with minimal coverage. Keep moist, but not wet. Foliar application of fertilizer after first season to promote growth and strength.
Discussion: Ginkgo is best known as a living fossil related to conifers and the sole survivor of its ancient and formerly widespread family. The Ginkgo tree is the only living representative of the order Ginkgoales, a group of gymnosperms composed of the family Ginkgoaceae consisting of about 18 members with its earliest leaf fossils dating back to 270 million years ago, in the Permian period, so in the era of the dinosaurs (Jurassic 213 million years ago) it already existed. Fossil leaves and vegetative organs show that at that time there were at least two species. During the Middle Jurassic, there was a great increase in species (5 or 6) with a maximum diversity (at least 11 species) during the Cretaceous period (144 million years ago) in areas now known as Asia, Europe and North America. It was common and widespread for a long time. This sacred tree has long been cultivated and possibly preserved from extinction by Buddhist priests on temple grounds in China, Japan, and Korea. Female trees are objectionable because of the litter of seeds, which reek like rancid butter; they should not be touched because the smell lingers after contact. The seeds, or Ginkgo nuts, are eaten in the Orient. The name "Maidenhair-tree" alludes to the resemblance of the leaves to that fern. This hardy tree is resistant to smoke, dust, wind, ice, insect pests, and disease.
