Zizania palustris
The Caviar of Grain, Wild Rice, Field Rice, Marsh Oats, Blackbird Oats, Pond Rice, Lake Rice, Indian Rice, Water Oats, Southern Wild Rice, Native American (Amerind) Long Grain Rice, and River Rice

Description: A beautiful addition to water ponds and moist areas. Very tall aquatic to semi-aquatic plant, 10 to 12 feet is the average height of the mature plant. Deep green, grass like leaves to 4 feet long or longer. Bears 30 pyramidal panicles of pale green flowers followed by edible rice Seeds. Does require lots of moisture to grow. Good game food. This native grass has a very large, erect, branched inflorescence which produces edible grains. Wild-rice usually grows in water; it is often planted as food staple for rural farms. Wild rice is one of the largest grasses known outside the bamboo. Conflicting with its given name, Wild Rice is actually the seed of wetlands/river grass.
USDA Zones: 2b to 5b. (Wild Rice may be grown in most all climates; however, the plant will be smaller as will the rice in very hot climates.)
Habitat: Perennial tidal and non-tidal marshes, lakes, ponds, seasonal wetlands, and natural basins that are a minimum of 4 inches deep, up to 48 inches in depth. Optimal planting and growing depth is between 16 and 24 inches.
Subsoil pH: 6.4 to 7.4. (Water pH may be greater or lesser in pH due to habitat and environmental conditions with minimal impact on growth and production.)
Sun: Full sun.
Characteristics: A type of bunchgrass that grows to 12 or more feet tall.
Blooms: From June to September.
Stems: To 12 or more feet tall, thick, and spongy.
Leaf Blades: Strap-like, 3 to 4 feet long, to 2 in. wide, smooth, margins sharply toothed
Inflorescence: Erect, very large, at stem tip, to 2 feet long and 1 foot across, spreading branches and branchlets, lower branchlets drooping (male flowers), upper branchlets pointing stiffly upward (female flowers)
Spikelet and Flowers: Abundant
Fruit: Ovoid grain, Yellow to Reddish when immature; turning Brown and Black when mature.
Large Seeding Rate: 5 lbs. to 10 lbs. per acre (seed in late winter, in standing water).
Home Seeding Rate: Seed at rate that provides you with desired amount of plants. (approximately 6 to 10 seeds per square foot of planting space.) Do not over sow; competition will adversely affect growth of plants thin if needed by either removing and/or relocating immature plants to open areas.
Cultivation: If you have a marshy area, shallow lake, pond, or tidal flat that you wish to grow Wild Rice on, it is a great crop to cultivate. Wild rice requires water year around and will grow in water as shallow as 4 inches and as deep as 4 feet. The ideal growing depth is 18 to 22 inches. Wild Rice can provide a bountiful, renewable source of food for both humans as well as wildlife. Wild rice germinates with the first warmth of spring.
Planting Schedule: Best time of the year to sow is Fall, however, local conditions, weather, and preferred harvest time should be taken into account prior to initial sowing.
Harvesting: Wild rice is harvested in the fall when the flower heads have ripened and turned a rich Purple. Wild rice requires minimal skill at harvesting, however, care should be taken so as to not impede the reseeding and regrowth process. Care should be exercised to not harvest all seed, allowing some to remain to replenish losses due to wildlife, weather, and other factors.
Importance of Plant: Wild rice has higher protein content than most cereal grains, making it a good food for humans and wildlife alike. Wild rice attracts many wild birds, especially waterfowl, and it also provides nesting cover for waterfowl.
Nutritional Information: Typically used as a substitute for potatoes or rice, Wild Rice is a very easily digestible food. Its high in carbohydrates and protein, high in antioxidants, low in fats, and gluten free. A study from Purdue Universitys Department of Horticulture advises that the mineral content of Wild Rice, which is high in Potassium and Phosphorus, compares favorably to corn, wheat, oats, and barley. Even though commercially processed Wild Rice lacks Vitamin A, hand harvested Wild Rice retains its vitamin A components, as well, it is an excellent source of the B Vitamins: Niacin, Thiamine, and Riboflavin.
Cold Treatment: Our Organic Wild Rice has been cold treated (Stratified) to ensure the highest germination that we can.
Storage: Please store your Organic Wild Rice in the refrigerator until you are ready to sow.
Ornamental Uses: Wild Rice is also grown as an accent in ornamental ponds, fish ponds, small lakes, as a centerpiece in planned water features, additionally as a waterline plant in managed wetlands.
Other Information: Throughout its range, wild-rice grows in rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds, generally in small to medium bodies of water. A native, aquatic, ancient cereal grain that grows in isolated riverbeds, marshes, and shallow lakes across North America, Wild Rice flourishes in areas of fresh or brachial water. Wild rice sprouts up from a bed of nutritionally-rich alluvial mud. In fact, Wild Rice is one of only two grains native to North America. Additionally, planting Wild Rice in ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water not only provides a food supply for people and wildlife, the quality of the water benefits as well. Wild Rice binds nutrients, fixes loose soils, and acts as a windbreak by shielding winds across shallow lakes and wetland areas marginally affected by seasonal winds. Stabilization of the water quality increases water clarity and helps reduce both toxic and non-toxic algal blooms. By the act of simple bioremediation, Wild Rice can help restore lost wetlands to their native state.
Seed Origin: Private family owned, maintained, and tested lake, Upper Peninsula Michigan, USA.
*** Special Notes: You will receive your seed, and it will be moist, you must allow the seed to remain moist until it is sown. ***
