About the Original: "Madonna and Child with Cross" is a classic icon with modern influences. The Holy Virgin sits under a portico flanked by angels. The Holy Child sits on her lap, and both hold the cross that serves as the emblem of their divine purpose. The painting was created by using the glazing method. Multiple translucent layers are placed one on top of the other. The wood panel has been covered with multiple layers of gesso and rabbit skin glue. The gesso was purposely cracked, to give it the look of an ancient icon. The haloes are 23K gold, gilding the red clay bole under it.
