It's hard to imagine a time without phones everywhere. Not that long ago, especially in densely populated cities and towns, if a fire broke out you would run to the nearest fire box to sound the alarm. The closest fire station would respond to the alarm, knowing only the general neighborhood of the fire (not the exact address), so off they would go to where the alarm was sounded and start looking for the fire.

I live in Chicago and have run across several of these old fire boxes. This particular one is right across the street from the Music Box Movie Theater located on the northside of Chicago. How times have changed, in this case, for the better.
