Khatam is the art of decorating wooden surfaces with small geometric triangulars cut from different kind of woods, silver, brass, and shell in a highly elaborate process which is done by arduous and sophisticated artisans. The decorated wooden surfaces then are treated with Lac to make it water proof and to give it the smoothness. Today most craftsmen , instead of Lac use polyester which is a glassy and fireproof subtance as a khatam finishing touch. The prepared wooden surfaces are then cut according to specific shapes and measurements to and placed together to make a variety of handicrafts which this clock is one of them. The woods used in Khatam : Ebony, Betel palm, Log wood, Jujube, Sour orange tree, Marple, Percicum, Poplar box tree. The metals used in Khatam : Gold (occasionally), silver, brass and aluminium.
