Handmade Market Bag From Papua New Guinea - Large Bilum
Details
This bag is 24 x 13 inches (61 x 33cm) when it isn't being stretched. The handle is 12 inches (30cm).
This amazing hand woven bag is traditionally used by women in Papua New Guinea for carrying anything from their shopping to their babies. The bag can take weeks to make as the yarn is first hand spun into a suitable string before the stitching can begin. There are a wide variety of patterns. Traditionally plant fibre is used for making these bags. They are very useful for carrying large loads of sweet potatoes (the staple diet in PNG) to the market for sale as they are very strong and versatile.
Some of the handles are longer and some are shorter, sometimes the handles are crocheted, not stitched the traditional way
These bags are able to stretch to remarkable sizes and can fit a large amount of produce. They are fantastic for farmer's markets and a great replacement for plastic bags.
