This month, the Jewelry Artisans Community has chosen summer fruit as the topic of our blog carnival.

Mmmmm...mmmmm.  What a treat it is when summer fruit starts to arrive at the markets.  If you're fortunate enough to have a farmer's market or access to locally grown fruit, be sure to take advantage of these wonderful resources and support your local farmers.

I thought I'd share some of my favorite summer fruits with all of you.  Ironically, I didn't have any fruit at home to photograph when I wrote this post, so I did some quick watercolor and ink illustrations to use instead.

Strawberries are usually the first to make their appearance in late spring/early summer.  Sweet with a trace of tart, they are a delight eaten on their own and delectable when served as strawberry shortcake.  For a real treat, try using angel food cake as the base of this delectable dessert.

Then there are cherries.  When coming into season we usually first see them at roadside stands and it's a rare day that we don't consume most of them before we get home.  Beautiful deep red, they are almost too pretty to eat!

Few things are as pleasurable as eating a perfectly ripe peach straight off the tree as the juice runs down hands and arms.  I've always thought that if we knew what the summer sun tasted like, peaches would best represent the sun's flavor.  The scent of a fresh peach is a sensory experience unto itself  - I love sniffing peaches!

At one time we had a peach tree in our backyard and our silly tennis ball fetching dogs were convinced it was a tennis ball tree.  They'd spend hours under the tree trying to grab a "tennis ball".  They were always surprised to find that the tennis balls turned out to be peaches instead!

Last but not least, the list of summer fruits wouldn't be complete without watermelon.  A perfect watermelon is crisp, sweet and dripping with juice.  The seedless varieties we have available to us these days, makes them easier to eat, but get one with seeds now and then and have a seed spitting contest.  You'll be creating fond memories with family and friends if you do.

Healthy and tasty, fruit is a great alternative to all those sugary high calory snacks that tempt us so often.  If you find yourself with an abundance of summer fruits, smoothies are a fantastic way to use them up.

A young friend of mine once shared her smoothie recipe with me and I am now going to share it with you.  She was only eight at the time and didn't include measurements which means this is a sort of eyeball it recipe.  Make these for a delicious treat on a hot summer day:

Strawberries
Peaches
Bananas
Strawberry/Banana Yogurt
Apple Juice.
Ice

Put in blender and mix well.  Pour into tall glasses and serve.  Better than a milkshake!

Refined Vintage, they never did eat the peaches, but we now have a dog who goes nuts for the apples on our apple tree and she loves watermelon! To watch Elle picking apples, check out this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqT5uvHQuOg It's a hoot! Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments - it seems we all like summer fruit!

Your post makes me want to eat a juicy peach right now. I totally agree about summer and fruit go hand in hand. Did you dogs ever end up liking peaches? I have a cat that likes to eat watermelon.
