Have you noticed some hammered link jewelry designs in my collection?  Pieces like Hammered Link Crystal Quartz Necklace, Hermatoid Quartz Leaf Pendant Necklace, Leopard Jasper freeform Necklace, Mahogany obsidian S link bracelet, or my new favorite, two toned hammered link bracelet?  I handmade each link and hammered it to give it texture. This technique is called metalsmithing.

A metalsmith is a person involved in the shaping of metal objects. I have taken metalsmithing classes to learn how to saw, hammer, bend, and shape metal to make jewelry. Forging is the term for shaping metal by using localized compressive forces. As always, every piece is made with Sterling Silver or Gold Filled materials. Clicking on the Metalsmithed studio sections on the right side of my studio will narrow the results to just these pieces.

To form the metal I place the shaped wire or sheet metal shape onto a steel block and then the fun part happens.  I get to pound it flat with a ball peen hammer or use the round side to get the texture that will reflect the light and shine when you wear it.  Shaping metal and texturing is very satisfying. Then I put the links into the tumbler to give them a great shine.  Each piece is a little part of my stress from the day and a little bit of a smile from getting to pound the heck out something.
